MLS set for 28 teams, Don Garber confirms in Sacramento

There's no timeframe on the expansion, but it's set to happen — and Sacramento Republic is coming in, too.

Major League Soccer isn't slowing down just yet — before they've even officially hit 24 team, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said the league is headed straight to 28.

He announced that today during an event in Sacramento. The four clubs yet to enter the mix that would bring MLS to 24? Atlanta, Minnesota, Miami, and LAFC — it's an interesting group, and it's only going to grow.

Sacramento United has been campaigning for a spot in MLS for several years now, and those plans finally look like they'll come to fruition.

There's no saying right now when exactly Sacramento will come in, and Garber stopped short of confirming that the club will join the league, saying instead that he expects them to join. That's close enough for us.

Rumors have floated recently that the days of expansion drafts are limited, which should ease some RSL fans' concerns after the news.
