Rio Tinto to host Santos, Tijuana friendly in June

MLS: Preseason-LA Galaxy vs Club Tijuana Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Rio Tinto Stadium will be buzzing with fans of Mexican soccer on June 24, and this time, it's not about the Mexican national team, and it's not about Real Salt Lake — Rio Tinto Stadium will host a friendly on June 24 between Santos Laguna and Club Tijuana.

That exhibition match takes place roughly a month after the end of the Liga MX season. It's one of the higher-profile non-national-team exhibitions the stadium has seen in a few years; most recently, RSL played Tijuana in August 2014 at Rio Tinto Stadium in an exhibition. RSL also traveled to Tijuana for a match on Feb. 2 as the team prepared for CONCACAF Champions League.

The match comes two days after RSL hosts New York Red Bulls at Rio Tinto Stadium; that will be the second match on the newly laid pitch, for which Real Salt Lake is taking an extensive road trip to accommodate.

This match could also spell a return to Rio Tinto Stadium for Benji Lopez, who was previously a homegrown player at RSL and has now signed at Santos. Lopez never played a competitive match for RSL.

Tickets for the exhibition will go on sale on May 9, and two open training sessions will take place on June 23.
