The first half definitely didn't go as planned. Real Salt Lake came in with what looked like a pretty strong lineup on paper. However, they were unable to string together a lot of good passes and Wilmington intercepted many of their attempts at build up and used their speedy forwards to spring an attack. Outside of a goal line save from Aaron Maund, some corner kicks, and some individual effort from Burrito Martinez, not much was working. Wilmington took advantage of the lackluster play and Corboz nabbed a goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Shortly into the second half Jeff Cassar brought on Movsisyan and Plata to inject some offense. The Hammerheads put everyone behind the ball and off of another breakaway took a shot from distance which deflected off of their own and went in giving them a cushion just after the subs came on. Joao didn’t let it phase him and within about five minutes he put one in at the top left corner breathing life into the stadium. With so many blue jerseys in the box, breaking them down again proved difficult. Burrito had other plans though and put a shot in at te far post past at least two defenders and the keeper to tie the game at two a piece sending the game to extra time.
The chances were there for Yura, Luke, Plata, and Morales in all different forms but Wilmington was scrappy and prevented all attempts. Wilmington got a free kick in the dying seconds and Jeff Attinella stretched to grab it and send the game to PKs with the game knotted at 2-2.
From the spot, the Hammerheads missed high, Burrito converted low and left, Hammerheads made, Plata put it in the low right corner, Hammerheads sent another one high, Morales’ attempt was saved, Attinella saved the next Hammerhead attempt, and Wingert made it to win the game.
