Real Salt Lake came out on their front foot with early chances and assertive play. The Timbers’ defense started to bend and Javier Morales smelled blood. On a corner he found Burrito Martinez on the far post who headed it over the keeper and in to pit RSL up 1-0. Soon thereafter the game started to get increasingly chippy. A poor giveaway led to a quick break for Potland and Adi put one through Nick Rimando’s legs to even the score. RSL started to get tired and seemed to lose some focus and before long the Timbers took a 2-1 lead when the defense broke down and the midfield didn't track their runners. Diego Valeri hit the post and Lucas Melano put in the rebound. That is the score that RSL would take to the lockers.
Both sides had some decent looks in a back and forth affair but there were not many clear cut chances. Yura Movsisyan looked determined to turn things around and his leadership paid off when he earned a penalty close to the 70th minute and put it in at the low edit corner to bring RSL back in it. They were once again zoned in and pushing forward with momentum and the crowd energized. Portland seemed to take a lead in the 86th when Mattocks curled it past Rimando but it was called offside. Portland had more control towards the end of the game, but RSL didn't allow them to take the lead and it ended 2-2z
