It took the Red Bulls all of six minutes to get ahead of Real Salt Lake with by and large their second string lineup. New York had the early chances and Godeon Baah put it in off of a corner kick from Sean Davis. Shortly after, Sunny Obayan went down with some sort of head injury and was subbed off after being taken to the locker room in a stretcher. RSL had the ball in New York’s half of the field for much of the rest of the half but their attempts were futile with the Red Bulls pressing high and putting their men in front of the goal. Except for the seven minutes of stoppage time, there was nothing exceptional about the first half for RSL.
RSL had to figure out a way to break through the opposition’s stingy defense. They started to see flashes of hope and in the 65th John Stertzer found Yura Movsisyan in the box who rose above two defenders to head it in and open up the match a bit. Things escalated quickly at the end of the match when Tomy Beltran passed it across the box to find Jordan Allen who took a shot that deflected and went in on the 88th.
