RSL exit on penalties, 3-1

MLS: U.S. Open Cup-Seattle Sounders FC at Real Salt Lake Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Real Salt Lake, unlike many of their recent games, came out energized and ready to put the Sounders on their heels. They knocked on the door and even rang the bell but the Sounders wouldn't open up and let them in. Chances were there after plenty of great passing but the finishMing came up short a couple times. In the 41st, Yura Movsisyan drew a penalty and after some soft arguing, Joao Plata stepped up to take it and powered it in to put RSL up at the half, 1-0.

Fibe minutes out of the tunnel, there was a miscommunication between Jeff Attinella and Justen Glad with a ball just outside the box that left Attinella out of position, Glad on the ground, and Nelson Valdez with an equalizer. RSL turned around and looked to get the game winner with plenty of attacking play. On a corner in the 79th minute, Aaron Maund headed a ball well but it went just wide right of goal. The last ten minutes were pretty nervy with chances for both clubs but nobody was able to break the deadlock and it went to extra time.

RSL saw their fair share of chances in extra time with Seattle parking nearly everyone in front of goal but were unable to convert in the first 15 minutes. Tyler Miller was having quite the night in goal.

In the 27th minute of extra time, Javi had a chance to put one past the keeper at the far post but it sailed across the face of the goal leaving the crowd letting out a collective moan and many hands heads. Time ran out and it went to penalty kicks.

Burrito put it in with ease. Plata’s penalty was saved leaving RSL down one. Beckerman's was also saved Leaving RSL down two. That sealed the deal and Seattle advanced 3-1 on PKs.
