Real Salt Lake looked up to the challenge and even the better team for the first 20 or so minutes of the game. RSL’s best chance of the first half came off of a ball sent across the goal from Jordan Allen which found Olmes Garcia. Olmes headed it centrally to Yura Movsisyan who headed the ball at goal but Ousted was able to save the ball. Soon thereafter, Vancouver started to turn the tide. In the 34th minute, things got turned on their head for Real Salt Lake when Vancouver sent a ball into the area and Tony Beltran tried to clear the ball but it went off of a trailing Justen Glad and into the goal to give Vancouver a lead. Three minutes later, Cristian Techera had a fantastic strike to the upper left corner that was next to impossible to save and that goal put the Whitecaps up 2-0. RSL managed to get into the locker room without conceding another goal to try and regroup.
RSL had a hard time getting things to go their way on offense with some decent looks but some poor shooting. The game slowed down quite a bit for both teams for much of the second half and Cassar looked to inject more control into the game by inserting Burrito and Morales. The Argentines brought some more creativity and possession, but it didn’t lead to any more goals and RSL lost 2-0 on the road.
