Things got off to a horrible start when eight minutes in, Real conceded off of a set piece and none other than Chris Wondolowski got the ball off a deflection and put San Jose up early. Not too long after, Kyle Beckerman had RSL’s best look of the half with a shot on goal from distance that the keeper couldn't grab, but no RSL player could get there quick enough. The Earthquakes sat back after that waiting for opportunities to break away. Around the 30th minute Yura Movsisyan came up with a flick paat the keeper that gave him a decent look at the goal, but the San Jose defense showed up just in time to keep it from going on frame. In the 44th Movsisyan came off with an injury and Olmes Garcia came on to end the half 1-0 for the visitors.
RSL was having trouble creating much of anything for the first 20 minutes of the second half while San Jose were getting more close calls than anyone was comfortable with. It seemed like a chance came out of nowhere for Salt Lake when Javier Morales chipped a ball to Luke Mulholland who only needed one touch to find the net and even up the game. Goals change matches and that one was no exception. The game opened up and it was up for grabs for both sides. In the 80tg minute during a chaotic sequence Shea Salinas took one from outside the box and hit the crossbar to make sure the crowd was awake. RSL was able to thwart some Earthquakes chances and pushed to get their own. Three minutes of stoppage time weren't enough and RSL tied at home again, 1-1.
