RSL pick up a point against Montreal, 1-1

RSL was under the gun from the whistle and soon enough they paid for it. Montreal won a free kick off a Beckerman foul and Nick Rimando punched the ball rather than catching it and Harry Shipp picked off the deflection and put it in I'm the 8th minute. The Impact had a lot more looks at goal for the rest of the half and Real Salt Lake looked shaky especially for being on their home field. Just before the first half ended, Montreal looked like they were going to get their second goal but Rimando came up big as he tends to do and kept RSL alive heading into the locker room.

Giving up the early goal made it difficult for RSL to get much going because Montreal was able to focus on defense with most of their club sitting back and then countering when the opportunity arose. RSL had maybe one shot on goal for most of the game and then close to the 80th minute Demar Phillips pulled off one of the most impressive individual effort plays to ever take place at the Riot. He ran the length of the field to beat two defenders on a long ball and kept the ball in bounds by a hair, then got up and nutmegged the opposition to find Joao Plata who then drew a penalty and Yura Movsisyan was able to convert to tie the game.
