For only the second time since 2007, Real Salt Lake has officially missed the playoffs, despite beating Sporting Kansas City to end the 2017 regular season.
FC Dallas trounced LA Galaxy by a significant margin with a 5-1 beatdown, while San Jose, who would have gone through to the playoffs with a victory, managed a 3-2 win against Minnesota United.
FC Dallas was the benefactor of some extremely lenient MLS decision making, but thankfully, it appears even a large margin of victory couldn’t land them in the playoffs.
San Jose’s victory came in what could only be described as the most San Jose way possible. Their third goal came in stoppage time in truly dramatic fashion, with one shot going wide before being collected at the far post for a second shot.
RSL’s turnaround in 2017 was a surprise, and their near-entrance into the playoffs speaks volumes about the work Mike Petke was able to do in Salt Lake City.
