Report: RSL taking FC Kansas City’s spot in NWSL, will play at Rio Tinto

The move would bring a second top-tier team under the RSL organization.

A Real Salt Lake-backed team will take FC Kansas City’s spot in the NWSL, according to a report from FourFourTwo’s Richard Farley that confirmed earlier rumors.

A later report from Salt Lake Tribune reporter Maddie Lee corroborated the FourFourTwo report, adding that the team is set to play at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Dell Loy Hansen and Utah Governor Gary Herbert are set for an announcement at 11 a.m. tomorrow, and an NWSL team has been expected to be the nature of the announcement.

With Real Monarchs moving to their own stadium at the new training complex, it was originally assumed that only one team would be playing at Rio Tinto Stadium regularly — but this would see the stadium hosting two top-tier teams.

More details are expected tomorrow, including when the team would start play. There has as yet been no word about the timing, and that will certainly be one of the more important pieces of the conversation.
