Player ratings: RSL 1-2 L.A. Galaxy

New, 5 comments

A good showing was derailed by a red card.

MLS: Los Angeles Galaxy at Real Salt Lake Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Rimando - 6 Two goals got past the GOAT, one of which he could do absolutely nothing about, the other he may have been able to get to the post a bit quicker. But his save on Jermaine Jones even earned praise from Jones himself.

Tony Beltran - 6 Beltran had Boateng locked down until the 10-man RSL squad got fatigued. Then Boateng struck again.

Justin Schmidt - 6 Schmidt is absolutely playing beyond his two-game MLS experience and seems to be improving at a rapid pace. If he wasn’t shaken against the Galaxy, he likely won’t be any time soon.

Chris Schuler - 5.5 You can argue whether or not Schuler actually committed the fouls that were whistled against him, but he put himself in the position to be on the referee’s radar too many times on set pieces.

Demar Phillips - 5 Phillips made his first start of the season and did pretty well, but was not as involved offensively as he needs to be.

Luke Mulholland - 6.5 Luke was the best defender for RSL on the night with some timely tackles and some gritty play to help RSL dominate the first half.

Kyle Beckerman - 4.5 There is a debate to be had around whether or not Beckerman deserved to be sent off, but at the end of the day player ratings are based on how the player affects the game. In this case, Beckerman being sent off completely changed the game for RSL and gave the Galaxy a serious advantage.

Albert Rusnak - 6.5 Rusnak was having a particularly good game until the Galaxy gained favor. His assist to Movsisyan required some serious skill and precision and it’s a beautiful thing to watch him start to gel and get on the stat sheet.

Brooks Lennon - 7 Surprise, surprise. Lennon was the brightest player on the field for RSL and we might just have a revelation on our hands. With a performance like that, it’s hard to argue that he shouldn’t be on the field. He nearly had a volley goal on his first touch and then made things dangerous from then on.

Sebastian Saucedo - 6 Bofo helped the players around him look pretty good and his individual skill to get into space was really fun to watch. He looks like a different player from last time he played MLS minutes.

Yura Movsisyan - 6.5 A nice header goal from Movsisyan took a monkey off RSL’s back. He looks like a leader on the field for this team, and they’ll need it to get out of the rut at the beginning of this season.

Substitutes

Chad Barrett - 4 Barrett could have put RSL up 2-0 which would have proved invaluable, but unfortunately, he was unable to convert the goal. Worse, he lost his mark which allowed Romney to score his rocket of a goal that then gave L.A. the momentum they needed to get the full three points.
