Could the New York Cosmos boss finally be tempted by Real Salt Lake?

Rumour has it that Real Salt Lake have identified one of their top targets for the vacant coach position after parting ways with Jeff Cassar a few days ago.

According to Matt Doyle on ExtraTime Radio, RSL have their sights set on two time NASL Soccer Bowl winner Giovanni Savarese. The current New York Cosmos coach is no stranger to offers from MLS teams with Minnesota being one of the latest to be rebuffed by the MetroStars, Long Island Rough Riders and New England Revolution forward.

If you want to hear for yourself, you can listen to ExtraTime Radio through MLSSoccer.com but here are the quotes from Matt Doyle:

The path forward for RSL is to do what they’ve done in FC Dallas — to find a coach who will build up the kids. It’s a business, you’ve got to be able to sell those guys for seven figures and bring the next group and have confidence that it can keep happening, that it ends up being an assembly line that can win.

Should they look at Martin Vasquez?

He’s a name I would look at, but I kind of wonder if Craig Waibel will want to just have a clean break from the previous regime at all levels, so to speak. I think we’ve seen that with Real Monarchs a little bit. I kind of expect it to be a new, unconnected face.

The name that I’ve heard from a couple of people, including Brian Dunseth, who we all know is as plugged into RSL as anyone, is Gio Savarese from the New York Cosmos. I think he’s done a really good job with that team. He’s a guy that can handle MLS sized egos, and he’s got connections overseas that can maybe help in terms of moving players along.

Opinions will likely be split on Savarese being head coach. On the one hand the 45 year old coach would come in with a wealth of experience from an 18 year pro career spanning the globe, notching 159 goals in 322 appearances for clubs and 30 caps for Venezuela, which is a pedigree any team would be excited about. However the other hand is his only coaching experience comes from a 4 year stint with NASL side New York Cosmos and there will be many fans hoping a bigger name coach to come in and galvanise the young talent we have into a winning machine.

With a reputation of rejecting MLS advances, Real Salt Lake may find themselves wanting Gio more than he wants to leave the Cosmos. But coming from such a prominent source, it's likely this rumour has a little weight behind it.

Let us know what your opinion would be on Gio Savarese coming in as RSL Head Coach in the comments!
