Most of us here are into soccer for more than just one team, and that’s one of the beauties of the sport. With the proliferation of leagues, and the fact that ours is demonstrably not the most highly technical, fans of MLS clubs often turn overseas to find the best soccer.
And there’s nothing wrong with that — there are so many reasons to love MLS and Real Salt Lake, we don’t have to be ashamed of the fact that we can enjoy other soccer, too.
With that in mind, I’d like to kick off our next open thread. Who’s your favorite non-Real Salt Lake player? I’ll start things off.
Note: Don’t have a favorite non-RSL player? We get it! How about you tell us about your favorite player that doesn’t currently play for Real Salt Lake?
I think my favorite non-RSL player might be Dennis Bergkamp. I haven’t made too secret my preference for Arsenal (please, let’s not talk about this year or... well, really that many years recently. This isn’t about that.) It’s a little bit of a family thing. You get it, right? Right. Anyway!
Why is he one of my favorites? It’s about his touch, poise, and ability to control, well, everything, including time itself. The sort of quick thinking that requires is unreal. That’s quick thinking is the thing that really makes a player stand out — it’s what separates the great from the best, and I think that’s something Bergkamp brought with his game.
Plus, you know, he’s got that thing about not flying. That’s just interesting, and I love it.
What about you? Share your favorite with us, and if you’d like, include a video or two as context.
