Real Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman will be missing against Sporting Kansas City — he’s out with an apparent calf injury, which comes as a matchday surprise here.
He’s replaced in the starting lineup by Sunny, who played his first match since April 1 last weekend with Real Monarchs. He played roughly 60 to 70 minutes in that match, so perhaps it’s not the most damning thing to have him back in the lineup — but it’s hardly the news RSL coach Mike Petke will have wanted to contend with when deciding his lineup.
Matt VanOekel is starting in Nick Rimando’s stead, which doesn’t come as a surprise, given he was substituted in the second half against Atlanta United last weekend.
Aside from those changes, Petke’s lineup is exactly what we would have expected, largely because it’s exactly what he did last weekend in a loss to Atlanta United.
RSL lineup
VanOekel; Acosta, Wingert (c), Schuler, Phillips; Sunny, Mulholland, Rusnák; Lennon, Movsisyan, Plata
Bench: Fernandez, Dunk, Schmidt, Holness, Hernandez, Silva, Saucedo
