Real Salt Lake was already slated to be without Stephen Sunday on Saturday, but the MLS Disciplinary Committee really hammered that one home after issuing him a suspension for a high boot against AJ DeLaGarza on Wednesday.
There’s a little bit of curiosity here, though. The MLS Disciplinary Committee email specified that Sunny would serve the suspension against FC Dallas this weekend — but he was already set for a yellow card accumulation suspension after being shown a yellow card for exactly the same tackle.
It’s the second time Sunny has been issued a fine this season and the first he’s been given a suspension.
UPDATE: MLS is strange. Real Salt Lake clarified that Sunny will serve the suspension then return to four yellow cards for the sake of accumulation. So he’s not being double-punished — it’s more that they’ve upgraded his yellow to a red.
*Initially, Sunny was shown a yellow card on the play and would have been suspended for Saturday's match due to yellow card accumulation. He will now return to four yellow cards for the sake of accumulation and will be suspended upon receipt of his next yellow card.
Petke, already having been left with a selection quandary through injuries and Sunny’s suspension, is likely to deploy Kyle Beckerman, Luke Mulholland and Albert Rusnak in the midfield. It’s also possible he’ll deploy Omar Holness in a midfield role, and Jose Hernandez remains an option.
RSL faces FC Dallas on Saturday at 6 p.m. Mountain time.
