What we’re watching in RSL vs. San Jose

RSL travel to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes missing a few key players.

Real Salt Lake are hoping to get another win, this time on the road in San Jose. RSL was able to get a scrappy 1-0 win last weekend over Minnesota United, but a road game will likely prove more difficult. Albert Rusnak is still away and both Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran are out for this game.

Yura! Yura! Yura!

This biggest news of late, and at this point it feels pretty drawn out, is Yura Movsisyan. The central striker got his first goal since mid April last week. It was certainly an odd goal, but a goal that won the game for RSL. There’s been a lot of talk about his goal celebration and his relationship with head coach Mike Petke. Even with a recent goal, we need to see more from Yura. He may not even start this game, but even if he doesn’t start, he’s likely he gets some minutes. There’s only one real question here, will Yura add more goals to his name?

More Injuries — dear god, when will it end?

Sunny, Phillips, and Beltran are all on the injury list this week with a Questionable status, while Jordan Allen has been added to the firmly Out column. Kyle Beckerman will miss this game with yellow card accumulation and Albert Rusnak is still with his national team. Five guys on the injury list isn’t as bad as we’ve seen it this year, but it certain seems that we can’t keep a healthy team. Just when it looked as though RSL was out of the injury woods, at least five kep players are out for one reason or another. Let’s hope some of the bench players can prove their worth.

An Effective Midfield

Beckerman and Rusnak are two of RSL’s most important players. We’re likely to see a midfield that consists of Omar Holness, Luke Mulholland, and Jefferson Savarino. Holness’ play was less than ideal against Sacramento. With Luke, he always seems to provide the best work-rate but some of the most inconsistence passing. I am excited at the prospect of Jefferson in the number 10 spot again. In one way or another, all three of these guys have something to prove, so let’s hope they show their best ability in San Jose.
