Luke Mulholland given one-match ban from MLS Disciplinary Committee

Another tackle, another suspension for an RSL midfielder.

In a trend that’s been all-too frequent, Real Salt Lake will be without one of its midfielders against Portland Timbers tomorrow after Luke Mulholland was handed a one-match suspension for a non-carded tackle.

The tackle came in the 57th minute against Emmanuel Boateng, and Mulholland was shown no card on the play.

The tackle was certainly a crunching one, and Mulholland definitely got Boateng from behind. But it’s increasingly clear that this sort of thing is going unpunished in the match aside from a foul call.

A spokesperson from RSL Communications confirmed the suspension, which puts RSL in again a tricky position.

This leaves RSL looking awfully thin in the non-attacking portion of the midfield, with Kyle Beckerman and Sunny the only two players available for the match who have played there this season with any frequency. Danilo Acosta, who has largely played left back this season, could well be in contention for minutes in the midfield, which does put him back in his more natural position.

The following players are listed out by the club ahead of Wednesday’s match:

  • Chad Barrett (knee 3/21)
  • Jordan Allen (knee 6/17)
  • Omar Holness (knee 6/28)
  • Ricardo Velazco (ankle 7/11)
  • Yura Movsisyan (hip 7/15)
  • Matt VanOekel (ankle 7/2)
