A Real Salt Lake side that's played three games from Monday couldn't push past Sporting Kansas City at Rio Tinto, drawing 1-1 in a testy affair.
Luis Silva opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with a well-worked counterattacking strike from the top of the box, finishing a Joao Plata cross with panache. That play started from a Danilo Acosta pass from well within the RSL half, echoing his pass for a Joao Plata goal against Portland Timbers.
A 57th minute decision saw Marcelo Silva whistled for a penalty after a spell of indecision from RSL’s backline, which led to an SKC attack. Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber scored the ensuing penalty with a stutter step that sent RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando the wrong direction.
In the 73rd minute, Luis Silva accomplished the unusual feat of hitting the post three times on one attacking play, first hitting both posts with a near-sure shot, then hitting near the crossbar with the ensuing shot from the rebound.
With time winding down and RSL searching for a go-ahead goal, Luis Silva beat three defenders in the box and fired a shot that KC goalkeeper Tim Melia got a reaching hand to, denying RSL as he did repeatedly through the course of the 90 minutes.
