Sunny made his first start since returning from injury and he looked hungry. During the two week break after head coach Mike Petke advised his players to exercise and fight like dogs upon their return, Sunny posted a video of himself on Twitter running on a treadmill with the line “werk hard play hard”. Clearly he is willing to put in the work asked of him to earn a spot on the team.
That said, we haven’t seen consistent play from him since his jaw fracture. His performance against Orlando City was his first chance to get back on the field in a while and he was reminiscent of the Sunny we saw right after he was acquired by RSL. He was tenacious as can be and had a clean touch on the ball. He played selflessly and committed tactical fouls when necessary. He was settling the ball from mid air and immediately finding the attacking player.
RSL didn’t win on the night, but Sunny was really fun to watch and was my Man of the Match.
