RSL took care of business as they downed the visiting Seattle Sounders 2-0, snapping the visitors’ 13-game unbeaten streak.
Mike Petke trotted out the lineup you’d expect, aside from one minor detail. While Luis Silva is out with an apparent injury, he opted to start Brooks Lennon up top and keep Yura Movsisyan on the bench.
With some great back and forth play in the first half, including fantastic chances from RSL, the teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 0-0.
Whatever Petke told the guys during the break worked, because RSL wasted very little time in the second half, coming out with a renewed sense of urgency and control.
Jefferson Savarino opened the scoring in the 52nd minute after a beautiful pass from Albert Rusnak found its way to his feet. Sava put the ball toward the far post and sent it right past Seattle ‘keeper Stefan Frei to put the home side up 1-0.
RSL would continue to control the game as the 66th minute saw a fantastic goal from Luke Mulholland. Savarino sent a cross in from the right wing that found a streaking Luke ready and willing, who then easily put the ball in the back of the net to secure a 2-0 lead over the visitors.
Seattle had a couple dangerous chances from there on out, including a save of the week candidate from Nick Rimando late in the game to keep the clean sheet.
The game would end 2-0 for the home side in which RSL earned a much-needed three points. After other results went their way, RSL finds themselves in fifth place in the west, greatly improving their chances to qualify for playoffs.
