Today, Real Salt Lake announced that they had signed Kyle Beckerman to a new contract, putting the official stamp on what we all expected to happen. While it has taken some time for the contract to be completed and officially announced, there was never much doubt that Kyle would be returning to lead the Claret and Cobalt through the 2018 campaign.
Rumors swirled around regarding several other players possibly coming and going from the team, but no such rumors ever appeared regarding Beckerman.
Through a storied career, Kyle has made 284 career appearances for RSL, logging nearly 25,000 minutes on the field. He has also served as team captain since early in the 2008 season, establishing himself as the heart and soul of the team. And he led the team with that same fire for years, earning the complete respect and loyalty of his teammates, and the undying love and adoration of the fans. When people in the soccer world talk about Real Salt Lake, the first thing they bring up is Kyle Beckerman and his legendary dreadlocks.
Following the end of the 2017 season, Beckerman shockingly cut his well known and beloved dreads, and then quietly disappeared for much of the off-season, leaving RSL Soapbox writers with nothing to do besides speculate on his possible whereabouts.
But where he has been this off-season no longer matters to us. Now we can happily look back at all of the funny thoughts of where he might have been, because now we know it for certain; Kyle Beckerman will wear the Claret and Cobalt again in 2018. He will bring the same fire, experience, and leadership that he always has, and lead Real Salt Lake fearlessly forward into a new season with high expectations.
