Kyle Beckerman’s best Real Salt Lake moments

After 10 years in the Claret and Cobalt, Captain Kyle has some amazing moments

Kyle Beckman didn’t round out a decade of dominance with an MLS Playoff game but it most certainly wasn’t without highlights. Three days after the 10 year anniversary of his trade from Colorado, Kyle dropped a bomb in Portland and before the end of the season he saved our playoff hopes against LA Galaxy.

Whatever season you want to reference, you can probably find a moment that would cement the legacy of any player. What stands Beckerman apart from the rest is the alarming regularity that it would be easy to forget some of them. But worry not, we’re here to remind you of Kyle Beckermans best Real Salt Lake moments.

Kyle vs. Seattle

Home or Away, you don’t ever get an easy game against Seattle. In games like the June 2013 home clash with the Sounders, it was the Captain who led the team all the way. A dominant performance from him in the middle of the park helped keep Seattle from shooting for an unthinkable 72 minutes as he chased down every player and gave them no time on the ball. He was also the player who finally opened the scoring just before half time with a crossbar-rattling shot that nobody could stop. Real Salt Lake would fall to Sporting Kansas City in one of the greatest penalty shootouts in MLS history, but that game against Seattle and the drive from Beckerman personified the tenacious 2013 squad that almost went all the way.

That LA Goal

Ok, so I already mentioned it in the opening blurb, but talk about a captain leading by example! With the final kick of the game, in a match that could have sealed the fate of the team, in a season where the team rose from laughing stock to underdog of the year, Kyle Beckerman shows everybody what it means to play until the whistle. It’s not a long bomb or intricate web of passing play. It’s a smash and grab effort against a team that’s shut off for the night. Every single player comes to him and celebrates and he takes the time to show every single one of the players who worked their backsides off for him that he appreciates all the work they have put in for him.

That Photo

I mean, what a hunk, am I right?

All jokes aside, this is the picture that, for me at least, stands out when I think of the Cup. Not anything from the game so much but this image of a man who reached the very pinnacle of the league. Here is our captain, with our scarf, holding our trophy. There’s a whole shoot from Getty from from the Cup winning season but this will always be the one that stands out for me.

Five-Time All Star

Beckerman is a player that isn’t just appreciated by the fans out in Utah, he is a player that is loved by every MLS team and no other accolade speaks to that more than his five consecutive call ups, spanning from 2009 to 2013. Regardless of the result, having our captain represent the league against some of the best teams in the world is recognition that he is a league ambassador and a legend for US Soccer.
