After using their timeout in today’s MLS Draft, Real Salt Lake traded the 10th pick in the first round to the Chicago Fire in exchange for $85,000 in general allocation money.
With the 10th pick in the 2018 MLS Draft obtained from RSL, Chicago took Mo Adams of Syracuse University.
In an interview on the stream, RSL coach Mike Petke described the reasoning behind the trade.
“Well, what was behind it was that we got our #1 and #2 pick already. Aaron Herrera is a top three pick in this draft. Corey Baird is a first round pick. We were looking for one or two players that if they fell, but they were drafted already. In our two players, Aaron Herrera and Corey Baird, we feel they can come in and compete, and they’re definitely big players for the future.”
That leaves RSL without a first round pick, which last occurred in 2015, when the club traded their 16th pick to Seattle Sounders, with which they selected Cristian Roldan.
Oh, and here’s a video the club took of Don Garber declaring RSL’s timeout. Fun!
