Utah Royals FC sign Iceland international Gunnhildur “Gunny” Jonsdottir

The Utah Royals continue to build their roster, making room for an international spot

The Utah Royals FC announced today the signing of 29-year-old midfielder “Gunny” Jonsdottir, pending her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

Jonsdottir, with 48 international caps, is one of the top goalscorers for Iceland. She helped Iceland qualify for the 2013 Women’s UEFA World Cup Quarterfinals. It was Iceland’s best finish in the tournament’s history.

At the club level, Jonsdottir has played more than 200 club games, beginning her career in 2008 with Stjarnan FC at the age of 14, scoring 22 goals in 66 games. She captained the club to five trophies and was named a the best player in the league in 2011. In 2013, Jonsdottir continued her career in Norway, playing for four clubs where she led Valerenga to the Norwegian Final, the first for the club.

Known as “Gunny” to her teammates, Jonsdottir expressed her excitement in the Utah Royals’ press release. “I am so excited and grateful for the opportunity to play for Utah Royals FC this year. I have heard such great things about Laura [Harvey], and I know I will learn a lot from her,” she said.

Jonsdottir joins Becky Sauerbrunn and Kelley O’Hara as the Royals continue to build their roster. The 2018 NWSL season kicks off in March.
