RSL coach Mike Petke, clearly not the happiest man in the world right now after his team lost 4-1 to Portland Timbers at Rio Tinto Stadium, says the loss is on him.
Tonight’s on me. I got the tactics wrong. I thought we had a good game plan going in. We didn’t. Now it’s going to be an interesting last two games. We’ll see what we’re made of. We had energy for a minute when we equalized and a little more right after then let it slip away.
More specifically about why Portland was so dangerous:
Valeri. Valeri found pockets we couldn’t keep track of. Transition. We know they were going to be a huge counterattack, transition team. Our inability to create energy, to receive the ball in the right areas — that’s a credit to Portland, to their shape, their bite we didn’t seem to have.
We’re going to see what we’re made of now. From me, the coaching staff and straight through the players.
Couple that with our last two games being three days apart from each other, and the second part during an international break, this is going to be an interesting game.
So there you have it. Petke had a few other choice words before he kicked off the press conference — walking in — but we’ll have to save that topic for another day.
