Three matches across Utah’s soccer trifecta to watch in 2018

We’ve got three teams to keep track of this season. Here are some of the most exciting matches slated for this season.

MLS: Real Salt Lake vs. Orlando City SC Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

There’s going to be a lot of soccer played by Utah teams this year. When I say a lot, I mean 92 different games between March and October. That’s an insane amount of soccer. What we’re going to do today is take a look at what is the most (at least in my opinion) important match to watch for each of our teams.

Real Salt Lake

July 4 vs. Sporting Kansas City: As an RSL fan, is there really any game more important than this one? On a beloved holiday, in the heat of the summer, versus THAT team. Getting a result here get’s us bragging rights, brownie points, any good thing you can think of will happen if we win this game. This is the single most intense game of the season; there is so much hatred between these fan bases, especially now that we have what used to be their NWSL team, there is going to be a lot of tension in the RioT that day, but it’s one you should call in sick to work for.

Utah Royals FC

August 11 vs. Seattle Reign: It’s tough to say exactly what the rivalries will be for this team and how much emphasis certain games will have among the fans and players, because there’s not been much history built yet, but looking at what we know about these teams, this game is going to be big. Not only is it against the Seattle Reign, head coach Laura Harvey’s former team, but it’s on the same day as the Real Salt Lake vs. Montreal Impact match. This doesn’t mean necessarily that it’s any more important but it’s going to be a historical night in Sandy, Utah and you’ll definitely want to try and get a ticket to that game.

Real Monarchs

March 31 vs. Timbers FC 2: Okay I know this seems a little obvious, but hear me out: This is the first game that will ever be played in Zions Bank Stadium. The Monarchs will finally have their own home field, and they get to break it in against a team that everyone loves to beat. It always feels good if you’re under the RSL umbrella to beat a team from Portland. Plus, to get your own brand new stadium will make any game memorable. Be sure to get your tickets to this one, because it’s going to be a historic night.
