Tony Beltran is a defender for Real Salt Lake that signed via the MLS Superdraft in 2008. In 2017 he played 1,820 minutes with 21 starts, a goal and an assist. Beltran is known for being one of the most stable defenders for RSL, rarely missing games and rarely getting injured. Until late last season he had started nearly every match for Real Salt Lake since joining the team.
What to know
In the end of the 2017 season Beltran was injured in game which ultimately lead to him having to get two surgeries. These two surgeries were estimated to keep Beltran from playing soccer for 9 months, roughly until August of 2018. He may be out longer than that, but it is expected for him to miss nearly if not all of 2018.
What to expect in 2018
Unfortunately, you shouldn’t be expecting very much from Beltran throughout 2018. The defender who has been a steady presence in the back for nearly a decade, is going to miss almost the entire season. Luckily there is enough people who were signed in the offseason to make up for his absence, but Beltran’s injury is likely to hinder the strength of RSL’s backline for a little bit.
What to hope for
All we can hope for as far as Beltran’s recovery, is that it is quick. He deserves to get to have his son watch him play at the RioT this season, hopefully he heals quickly enough that that can happen. As for RSL’s backline, we can hope that young stars like Aaron Herrera can fill the gap and keep this team strong defensively. Mike Petke knows what he’s doing though, RSL will be just fine, just missing a fan favorite in the back for a little while.
