The bulk of the first half feature d a counterattacking approach from San Jose, with which RSL did just about well enough to deal with, with the speed of Aaron Herrera coming in handy on multiple instances.
San Jose did put the ball into the back of the net in in the 54th minute from a cross, but Quincy Amarikwa was whistled for a foul on the play.
Alredo Ortuño netted his first Real Salt Lake goal (the first of many, we hope) inside the same minute as he combined well with Ricky Lopez-Espin on a break. Ortuño’s shot was a spectacularly bending effort from inside the box, tucking in the near side of the net to put RSL up 1-0.
San Jose leveled through Amrikwa in the 60th minute with a headed goal from close range, though RSL’s inability to defend several consecutive crosses put the team in a vulnerable position from the outset.
Making their first appearances in preseason, Albert Rusnak and Marcelo Silva went through largely without incident. There was a slight scare with Rusnak, who appeared to be injured late in the first half, but he returned to the field to finish out the half.
