It’s not every day the United States Women’s National Team ventures out to Sandy, Utah to play in Rio Tinto Stadium, but once again they did. On June 7th, 2018 the USWNT played China in an international friendly where the US ultimately won by a score of 1-0.

This match had some firsts for a couple of people. Savannah McCaskill and McCall Zerboni got their first-ever senior national team starts. In addition to that, USWNT veteran Amy Rodriguez got her first minutes for the U.S. since coming back from her devastating ACL injury last year. These firsts, although different, are huge for all three women involved.

This game throughout the first half was pretty even. Both teams got a few decent looks but nothing too crazy that gave either team the lead.

Going into halftime, fans were still awaiting the first goal of the game. Luckily, Alex Morgan wanted to change that. In the 57th minute off a beautiful cross from Megan Rapinoe on a set piece, Morgan found the back of the net with a header.

The game remained relatively calm after that, though the U.S. kept the better of China. Having the better of the opportunities throughout the second half, and also being able to maintain possession more effectively, this game ultimately ended in a 1-0 win for the U.S. The U.S. will take on China once more on June 12 in Cleveland.

The official Woman of the Match for this game was McCall Zerboni, an impressive feat to get on her first start for the senior national team.
