The rumor mill has been hard at work the last little while for RSL, and today is no exception. Yet another transfer rumor, coming from multiple sources, citing that Real Salt Lake are all set to sign defensive midfielder Everton Luiz from Serie A club SPAL.

The news looks to have originated from Gianluca Di Marzio, who reported on his website that RSL are close to securing a loan deal for the 30-year-old Brazilian that will see Luiz in Salt Lake through the 2019 season, with the option to purchase him at the end of the loan.

Luiz spent much of his career in Brazil before making the move to Lugano in Switzerland back in 2013. From there, he bounced around between a few clubs before landing at SPAL in 2018, making 21 appearances for the Serie A side.

This news comes at a great time after Real Salt Lake declined the options of both Sunny and Luke Mulholland, who had served as holding midfielders before. If the Luiz deal goes through, he’ll obviously be playing next to Kyle Beckerman should Mike Petke keep the same general formation he used during most of last season.

As always, this is just a rumor, although with various outlets such as the mothership (MLSSoccer.com) reporting it, one would have little reason to doubt the validity of the report. We’ll post updates as they become available.
