Player Ratings: RSL 2-1 Portland

RImando had another home game and another great performance.

MLS: MLS Cup Playoffs-Round One-Portland Timbers at Real Salt Lake Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Rimando - 7.5 Rimando got another home match and he was huge in this one. The Timbers had some good chances to score, but Rimando was big in those big moments.

Aaron Herrera - 6.5 Herrera’s half volley shot was a thing of beauty even if it did not end up in the net. Probably more important than that highlight was his defensive soundness. He played like a veteran.

Nedum Onuoha - 6 Nedum came through in some dicey moments, especially in the second half. He was calm and confident all night.

Marcelo Silva - 6 Silva, as per usual, had some hard nosed tackles to keep Portland from getting too gutsy. He was ready to play from the opening whistle.

Donny Toia - 5.5 Toia’s defense was there, but his passes were errant more often than one would like.

Everton Luiz - 7 Luiz was a force in the middle of the field. His explosive speed and ability to win the ball or stop a play on a dime was incredible to watch.

Kyle Beckerman - 5.5 Beckerman battled and helped RSL recover from Portland’s equalizing goal. He calmed things down when RSL looked nervy, but had a giveaway or two that were also poorly executed.

Damir Kreilach - 6.5 Kreilalch was not afraid to pull the trigger playing as the center forward and as we saw last year, he likes to score in the MLS Playoffs.

Albert Rusnak - 6 Rusnak’s work on the ball was fun to see, and his dummy ball to open up space for Savarino turned out to be really important.

Jefferson Savarino - 6.5 Savarino did it again. He came through for a moment of magic when RSL needed him just when the final whistle was about to blow. This time, his moment sent RSL through to the next round.

Corey Baird - 6.5 Baird set the tone for RSL early. He got a couple of looks at the goal forcing Steve Clark to make some tough stops. He also deftly set up Kreilach in the space between the defenders and the keeper to put RSL up in the first half.

Joao Plata - 6.5 I am not exactly sure why Plata was not awarded an assist for his ball to Savarino on the game-winning goal, but Plata came on and help turn the tide in RSL’s favor with his central runs and his ability to get past defenders.

Sam Johnson - 6 Johnson, like Plata, came on and helped change the game for Real Salt Lake. He controlled the ball and gave Portland fits trying to keep track of him.

Kelyn Rowe - N/A
