Real Salt Lake’s coaching search — and general manager search — looks to have started, with a report in The Athletic revealing that the club is set to interview former RSL coach Jason Kreis for both positions.

Light on specifics (as you’d expect, given the breaking nature of this), the report indicates that Kreis is intended to be interviewed for both positions in one role. That would be an interesting departure from the past for RSL, who have typically had two filling that role.

The report also indicates that RSL intends to interview current interim coach Freddy Juarez for the role, and should be hired as coach, Kreis could still be interviewed solely for the general manager spot.

Kreis currently serves as the head of the Inter Miami academy; the MLS newcomers have apparently OKed the contact and interview. (A good thing, too — we don’t need another slap on the wrist for that, as happened in ... 2007? I think it was 2007.)

It’s difficult to say if this comes to fruition. Kreis left somewhat acrimoniously to New York City FC following the 2013 season, but his time there and at Orlando City SC was cut short after poor results. Kreis famously refused a contract offer from Dell Loy Hansen after an initial low-ball offer to remain at the club.

If he does return, it would be particularly interesting to see who comes with him. Would he bring along longtime assistant Miles Joseph? What of Javier Morales, a coach at the same academy?

Time will tell.
