Makenzy Doniak traded to the Chicago Red Stars

On a day where the National Women’s Soccer League announced it would remain at nine teams for the 2020 season, trades were allowed to go through.

Up first, Utah Royals FC acquired a second-round pick in the 2021 NWSL College Draft from the Chicago Red Stars in exchange for forward Makenzy Doniak.

Doniak was originally traded to Utah Royals FC while on the injury reserve for an ACL tear in the summer of 2018 for the rights to Heather O’Reilly. She made a full recovery for the 2019 season.

Doniak’s time on the field was limited to 167 minutes in 11 appearances, earning her first start and only start vs. the Washington Spirit on June 1. For 2019, she completed 64.8% passes and won 57.1% of duels. She scored one goal for URFC in May 2019, an emotional moment for a player who had made a comeback after her ACL injury.

The trade now gives Royals FC three picks in the college draft, an earlier one, instead of just the two they had, the 26th and 35th picks.
