Gaby Vincent wasn’t known by many Utah Royals FC fans when she was brought onto the roster to contribute during the World Cup stretch. She went undrafted in the 2019 NWSL College draft, and that left her going to tryouts. It turned out to be a great thing for the Royals.
Originally signed to provide depth while Rachel Corsie and Becky Sauerbrunn were at the World Cup, Vincent made her first appearance for the Royals against North Carolina when Samantha Johnson suffered an injury. She subbed on at halftime and played well, paving way for a solid rookie campaign. The game ended 1-1.
The team was impressed by her play through the year. During the season, the team signed her to a regular contract. She was originally on a supplemental contract. After being a solid option, she deserved to be added to the roster.
Gaby played in 9 games last season, starting in 7 of them. The second substitute appearance happened in URFC’s 2-1 loss to the Houston Dash. That was her last appearance of the season.
Vincent is expected to return next season. The club picked up her player option. Gaby returning next year is a good move for both the club and her development. URFC needs depth at center back. Gaby gets to work with Becky Sauerbrunn and Rachel Corsie, some of the top center backs in the world. She may not get much playing time, but she will be learning from the best.
