Real Salt Lake’s 2019 forward signing, Sam Johnson, has been called up to the Liberian National Team for an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Democratic Republic of Congo.

As part of that call-up, he’ll miss RSL’s March 23 match against LAFC.

The match for which Johnson has been called up takes place on March 24 in DR Congo. A press release from RSL Communications indicated he should be available for RSL’s March 30 match against FC Dallas in Salt Lake, though it is certainly a lot of travel he’ll be undergoing.

In a club-issued release, RSL general manager Craig Waibel described the call-up as a “great opportunity.”

“This is a great opportunity for Sam. He was a big part of his national team last year and this is an important game for them so we are glad he is getting the recognition he deserves with Liberia.”

From the same release, RSL coach Mike Petke:

“I’m very happy that Sam’s getting called in. He’s still getting acclimated here with his teammates and with the league. The times that he has been on the field, he’s produced for us in many ways and I know he’s important to his national team.”
