A farewell letter to Samantha Johnson

Sam Johnson of Utah Royals FC retired after the Reign FC game, and I decided to write her a farewell letter.

Lucas Muller - RSL Soapbox

Dear Samantha Johnson,

It’s hard seeing a player who has played very well on the team you love retire, especially mid-season. It’s hard expressing what they mean to you, and what they have done means to you. I’m going to try to do that now.

You haven’t been a Utah Royal for long, but I want to say thank you for all you’ve done in a Utah Royals FC uniform, for all the times you’ve prevented a goal and helped lead URFC to a win. For all those times, like the loss against Reign FC where the result wasn’t what you wanted, but you gave it your all. You have made us proud to be fans of the team, and we’ll miss you.

You were a part of a huge mid-season trade, but you weren’t the player everyone was talking about, yet you came in, worked hard and have given as much to this club as anyone else on the team. You made it so people were talking about how great your contributions to the team were. You have influenced this team in many positive ways, as has Christen Press, while being the lesser known player. In sports, there aren’t many people who can do that, but you did. I call this trade a win.

I know the loss Reign FC wasn’t the way you wanted to finish your career, but that’s okay. You gave it your all, and that’s all I can ask for. I just want to say thank you one more time for all you have done to improve the game and to help this team to the best of your ability. Thank you for making us all proud: the fans, your teammates, the coaching staff, and the front office. All of the club is thankful for what you have brought to this team and community.

We want to wish you luck in your future endeavors, and we’ll be cheering you on the entire way. You’ll always have a home in Utah. Once a Utah Royal, always a Utah Royal.
