News of repercussions following Mike Petke’s Leagues Cup tirade has started trickling out, with ESPN’s Kristian Dyer reporting today that he’s looking at a $25,000 fine and a three-game suspension from the league.
Real Salt Lake head coach Mike Petke will face a multigame suspension and be fined up to $25,000 following his altercation last week with referees in a loss to Tigres in the Leagues Cup, sources tell ESPN FC.
The report specifies that Petke’s suspension would begin on Saturday, when RSL hosts New York City FC.
It also indicated that Real Salt Lake mandated no contact with the team for a two-week period.
It’s a bit of an unprecedented situation. Public accusations of Petke have included that he shouted obscenities at the referee, including the Spanish word puto, which often carries with it homophobic connotation. No confirmation has been provided of those accusations.
No public news release has been made concerning Petke.
