NWSL Power Rankings - Week 12

The World Cup is done, and many teams will be happy to welcome back their international players! I’d say it’s doubtful you would ever see that in any other league worldwide. Portland Thorns FC was the only team to remain in their previous position (as they were one of the away winners).

I do rankings for both NWSL and MLS a little differently; typically in soccer leagues within the USA, the home team wins more than 50% of the time. Thus I rank any team deviates from the ‘normal’ higher - basically an away team winning will move higher than a home team winning. The same applies for ties - a home team drawing will likely cause them to drop because it’s not what was expected of them.

So without further mindless banter, here’s the power rankings for week 12. (#) indicates last week’s ranking.

  1. Reign FC (2) - Clipped the Thorns in Portland.
  2. North Carolina Courage (3) - Thumped the Dash by 3 goals at home
  3. Portland Thorns (1) - Got roughed up by the Reign on their home turf.
  4. Utah Royals (5) - Bye Week!
  5. Washington Spirit (6) - Pride dampened the Spirit in a high scoring game.
  6. Chicago Red Stars (4) - Gave Sky Blue their first road win in forever!
  7. Sky Blue FC (8) - Won their first game - and it was on the road!!
  8. Houston Dash (7) - Traveled to the East coast and got thumped by the Courage.
  9. Orlando Pride (9) - A last minute goal at home saw them finally win at home!
