Sam Johnson named to Liberian squad for World Cup qualifiers

The Liberian international departs after the weekend.

RSL forward Sam Johnson, as widely expected, has been named to the Liberian national team for two World Cup qualification matches against Sierra Leone.

Those matches take place on Sept. 4 and Sept. 8, meaning Johnson won’t miss Saturday’s Real Salt Lake match against Portland Timbers.

However, the likelihood of Johnson missing RSL’s Sept. 11 match against San Jose Earthquakes is considerably higher, as despite the three days between matches, he’ll be tasked with a long travel period back to Utah.

Johnson has played 14 matches with Liberia, scoring a scant two goals in the process. He has proven a reliable goalscoring option for Real Salt Lake, scoring in roughly half the matches in which he’s played.

From a Real Salt Lake press release, RSL general manager Craig Waibel:

“Sam has been crucial to our success, especially over the last few months. Playing with Liberia in World Cup Qualifiers is an incredible opportunity and we are thrilled for him.”
