As is often the case in American soccer these days, The Athletic has broken some news.
This time, it’s that RSL attacking talent Corey Baird has signed a new contract with the club, according to a report from The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal.
The report’s pretty light on detail, as it’s mostly a footnote, but it does specify that Baird is below the limit for using targeted allocation money, which essentially means he’s below the designated player level, more or less.
Of course, with a new collective bargaining agreement slated, that may mean nothing at the end of the month, but it at least gives us a framework for thinking about it now.
Interestingly, Baird was only on a meager $70,000 salary, according to the MLS Players Association. For a player that became nearly ever-present for the club, a raise was certainly due. While his 2019 campaign didn’t quite hit the goalscoring heights of his first in 2018, five goals and four assists isn’t a terrible outlay.
The club has yet to officially confirm the news. We’ve reached out to the club for confirmation.
