Off the Crossbar Special Edition: Dr. Robbie Russell interview

In this very special edition of Off the Crossbar, we spoke with former RSL defender Robbie Russell about his career in medicine, COVID-19, and that penalty kick.

The list of players who have changed Real Salt Lake for the better is a short one, and our guest on today’s episode of Off the Crossbar is certainly one of them: We’re talking with Robbie Russell, the man who scored RSL’s MLS Cup-winning penalty kick in 2009.

But more importantly than that, he’s a medical doctor (he’s an Emergency Medicine Intern at University of Virginia), and more than ever, that’s a dangerous role, and an incredible value he’s bringing to society.

We talked with him about his experience in medicine, how he figured out his career when he knew his playing days were numbered, and of course, how COVID-19 is affecting his day-to-day work.

Russell, a graduate of Duke, Georgetown and George Washington University Medical School, is articulate, considered, and an excellent interview. We’re lucky to have had him on the show. You can listen below or with one of the several subscription options listed above.
