RSL drawn into Group D with Sporting KC, Colorado, Minnesota

MLS is back. So are our big rivalries.

MLS: New York Red Bulls at Real Salt Lake Melissa Majchrzak-USA TODAY Sports

Because the universe is an endless loop, Real Salt Lake has been drawn into exactly the sort of group you’d expect in the very bizarre, very MLS tournament, MLS is Back.

Up first, drawn by presenter Charlie Davies by instruction from RSL coach Freddy Juarez, is Sporting Kansas City. Second: Colorado Rapids. Third: Minnesota United. That one’s less interesting, of course, but still. Oh boy.

The tournament starts next month, and all the matches will apparently be broadcast by MLS partners, so expect to see some fireworks in July. (I wonder what all this means to fireworks displays? It’s hard to see cities stopping those.

There’s no word yet on whether the Colorado Rapids match counts for the Rocky Mountain Cup, but you know what? It doesn’t actually matter, because this is MLS and what happens ... happens.

Freddy Juarez on the draw: “It’s a tough a group, rivalries with Colorado and Sporting, and Minnesota’s a very, very good team.”
