According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Christen Press will not join Utah Royals FC for the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, the 25-game tournament that will kick off on June 27, 2020 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. It will be the first time the NWSL competes in 2020 after COVID-19 postponed the start of the season.
Because of the severity of the pandemic, every NWSL Player, including US National Team members, had the right to opt out of the tournament should they not feel comfortable.
The club had been in discussions with all of its players and were hopeful that no one would sit out, including U.S. National Team members Press and Kelley O’Hara. However, as O’Hara returned to training, Press was not in attendance. It will undoubtedly change much of the tactics and strategy for URFC as it plays the one-month tournament without its key player.
We await official confirmation from the club on Press’ absence.
