Report: Kelley O’Hara opts out of NWSL Fall Series

The USWNT/Utah Royals FC defender will not participate in the upcoming NWSL fall series, per a report.

Per a report last night by Alex Vejar of The Salt Lake Tribune, Kelley O’Hara has opted out of the upcoming NWSL fall series to be held in September and October.

No reason was given for her decision and the club has not confirmed or denied the report. Last week, it was reported that O’Hara was to be traded to the Washington Spirit, but the Spirit turned down the trade as Utah asked for Ashley Hatch or Tegan McGrady in return.

Whether O’Hara’s decision is a result of an injury, the risk of playing during a pandemic, or because of the failed trade is yet to be known.

It’s been quite the saga involving a prominent national team player seeking a trade, and it’s clear, by the reports, that O’Hara wants to play in Washington. The Spirit tried to accommodate the request, but they were not willing to lose young talent.

O’Hara was traded to Utah Royals FC from Sky Blue FC in December 2017 prior the club’s inaugural season in 2018. Her time in Utah has been limited by injuries and national team duty.
