Welcome to March, it’s time for MLS preseason! Hopefully we’ll get some news about ownership, and finally get to see the team in action again.

MLS got some unfortunate news just before the weekend. The primary backer of future expansion team Sacramento Republic FC has pulled his support citing rising costs due to the pandemic. MLS will search for a new investor in hopes of salvaging the bid. [SSD][MLS]

INTERNATIONAL

  • 100 years ago today (March 1st) FIFA elected Jules Rimet as president. He served for 33 years, and was the driving force in creating the World Cup competition. [FIFA]
  • St. Johnstone beat Livingston 1-0 to win their first Scottish League cup in their 137 year history. It also ended Celtic’s run of 12 consecutive cup wins. [Guardian]
  • US International Tyler Adams rallied the defense for RB Leipzig in a comeback 3-2 win over Borussia Moenchengladbac in the Bundesliga. [SBI]
  • The coach for Manchester United is claiming referees won’t give them penalty kicks due to “outside pressure”. [NBC]
  • Bundesliga side Schalke has fired it’s coach Christian Gross along with 3 members of his coaching staff. [Goal]
  • Ireland is looking into the possibility of bidding for the 2030 World Cup, possibly as a joint bid with England. [Balls]

USA

  • US Soccer overturns it’s policy requiring players to stand during the National Anthem. [USAT]
  • US Soccer’s Athlete’s Council has voted to remove Seth Jahn after he made racial comments during a meeting. [Guardian] The decision reveals that US Soccer still has a long way to go to eliminate racism. [SSF]
  • US Youth Soccer playoffs are in full swing, here’s the weekend’s results. [SocWire]
  • 20 years ago the USMNT beat Mexico 2-0 starting the first of four consecutive “dos a cero” results. [FRS]
  • NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird has been named to the U.S. Soccer Federation’s board of directors. [ESPN]

  • Orlando City’s contract with Jonathan Suarez has been terminated following an investigation after his arrest for sexual battery. [SBI]
