Real Salt Lake dropped two points to Minnesota United on a temperate Saturday night, with a Zac MacMath error erasing the joy of a beautiful Damir Kreilach goal.
It was a night to forget for MacMath, who flubbed from a corner kick, and for RSL’s attack, who created option after option.
Damir Kreilach opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a set piece goal, nestling the ball into the corner following a low cross from Aaron Herrera. It was a well-executed set piece, starting with Pablo Ruiz, who found Herrera well open on the right side, and Kreilach’s finishing prowess left nothing to doubt.
The remainder of the first half saw little in the way of firm opportunities for either side, with some crucial stops from Marcelo Silva before play was allowed to progress to such a point.
The second half saw RSL largely profligate, with their opportunities squandered and their defense gasping.
The 78th minute saw Zac MacMath commit a tremendous error, coming out for a cross, missing it, then allowing the ball to drop behind him. It trickled into the goal, giving Minnesota the equalizer they’d be hunting for throughout the second half.
