Real Salt Lake, who looked to be the better team for the majority of the match, gave up two late goals in the final 10 minutes to drop all three points to the visiting San Jose Earthquakes, with a score of 2-1.
Justin Meram nearly opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he let a bomb rip from way outside the 18. It soared over Marcinkowski’s head and bounced off the crossbar, just inches away from ending up in the net.
Rubio Rubin ended up finding the first goal of the game just before halftime with an absolute golazo that has Goal of the Year candidate written all over it. Off a throw-in, the ball found its way to Damir Kreilach who headed it over to Rubin in the box. Rubin chested it up to himself facing away from goal, and went for a bicycle kick that was right on target. It flew in past Marcinkowski’s outstretched hand and into the net, putting the home side up 1-0 right before the halftime break.
Chris Wondolowski came on the field for the Quakes late in the game and turned the entire thing on its head, first by scoring a typical Wondo goal in the 83rd minute when he happened to be standing in the right spot at the right time, and was able to tap in a rebound off a deflected shot, finding the equalizer for the visitors late in the game.
He struck again just a few minutes later, grabbing the go-ahead goal and securing his brace as he was able to head a cross in just past Ochoa. He only played 18 minutes but was able to find the win for the Earthquakes in the end.
