Real Salt Lake flew past the Colorado Rapids tonight with a big 3-0 win at home thanks to an own goal and a pair of goals from Bobby Wood and Rubio Rubin. The win moves RSL ahead of Portland and into seventh place.
The first goal went in Real Salt Lake’s favor even though they really didn’t have a hand in it. A catastrophic gaffe from Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough opened the scoring when a pass back from his defender went wrong, and rolled past his feet and into the net. He tried to make a last ditch save but it was too late as the ball had rolled completely over the line, putting the home side ahead 1-0 early in the game.
Bobby Wood opened his RSL account not too much later after a pass from Albert Rusnak on a counter attack. Wood dribbled it in from the midfield taking on 2 Colorado defenders, then let a left footed shot rip from just inside the 18 that sailed past Yarbrough to put RSL up 2-0.
Rubio Rubin got a third for Salt Lake in the 76th minute thanks to a well placed pass from Damir Kreilach. He split the defenders to find Rubin, who dribbled it in past Abubakar and sent the ball into the back of the net, logging his fifth goal of the season and putting the home side up 3-0 with just over 10 minutes left to play.
Although Colorado looked better on paper with 58% possession and nine shots to RSL’s five, it was Real Salt Lake that earned all three points and another clean sheet. They’ll head to Houston next weekend for the first of a three-game road trip.
