Real Salt Lake, now winless in two, couldn’t find the back of the net in LA tonight as the Galaxy sent them packing with a 1-0 scoreline thanks to a goal from Efrain Alvarez. Erik Holt filled in for Justen Glad as he served his one-match suspension tonight after receiving two yellows in the last game against Houston.
RSL narrowly escaped giving up a first-half goal in the 19th minute when Kevin Cabral snuck one past Zac MacMath. The pass that came in before that to Efrain Alvarez was offside and the linesman called it appropriately, disallowing the goal and keeping the game scoreless.
The teams ended the first 45 minutes deadlocked at 0-0, but not for lack of chances as the LA Galaxy’s offense set the tone for the entire first half. The home side outshot RSL 9-4 overall with 5-1 on frame while controlling 54% of possession.
The Galaxy finally opened the scoring in the 53rd minute thanks to a quick give-and-go between Alvarez and Sacha Kljestan that found Alvarez able to break away toward goal and slot it past MacMath without much trouble. There was concern that Alvarez may have been offside, but the no-call on the field stood after a quick look from the VAR, and the Galaxy took the 1-0 lead early in the second half.
Despite a couple decent chances, RSL couldn’t get it done and the game ended 1-0 in favor of the home side. RSL has one more tough game on the road against Portland this weekend before they head back to Salt Lake for a two-game home stand.
